Annotating

In Elbow’s “Two Kinds of Thinking” my annotations consist of brackets around important paragraphs and sentences, circling anything "unknown" to me, and underlined descriptive words that help you understand the writers meaning behind his main point. Highlighting with different highlighters can help keep you on track with what paragraphs share the same topics, as well as paraphrasing what you highlighted. Using asterisks and bullet points can help remind you where important main ideas and words are located in the writing. Also, noting the sentences/paragraphs that you DO and DON'T agree with can make you better understand a writing (paint a better picture). In the body of the writing it can also be important to find evidence to back-up what the author is stating. Following these steps helps create a larger image of what the writer's objective was, therefore giving the reader a much better understanding of what they truly meant.
