PB1B on Genre Generators

The purpose of genre generators is to give someone a new perspective on what they might have had on a certain genre. These “random” genre generators give you back different conventions based on what you insert into the generator. Each different generator will give a totally different genre because they generate different words, conventions, and images each time you use them.

The first genre generator which I viewed was by a company called SCIgen, which generated random, and nonsensical, scientific research papers. This convention used by this generator would largely be based on “false” scientific studies, false research, and unactual information. This generator will create a believable research paper based on completely false information, but will make the reader believe it to be true.

An example of this website’s randomly generated scientific research paper is “Rooter: A methodology for the Typical Unification of Access Points and Redundancy.” This is clearly a nonsensical randomly generated paper, yet to the naked eye it is hard to tell the difference. Although it is based on completely fake information, it proved to be a surprisingly “smart” generator.

The second generator I viewed was Pandyland’s comic strip generator. This generator created randomized comic strips based off a certain genre or word put into it. The majority of conventions in this generator are similar to that of a comic book, which are being; colorful, vivid, bold, and cartoonlike.

The comic strip above is an example of one of Pandyland’s comic strips from its randomized generator. This shows the child-like, colorful, and vivid comic which was created at random based off a genre. This site is known for its completely nonsensical comic strips, as well as how funny they can be.

The next generator I viewed was used to create memes. Memes are an image of something funny or out-of-sorts with a usual funny text written above or below the image. Memes are known for being repetitive, since the same image may be used several times, just with different text written around it. The conventions memes have are very broad considering that they can be an image of anything with any words written on them, but for the most part they consist of; sarcasm, comedy, written text, one image.

The above image is an example of a very basic and commonly seen meme from the show “The Office”. These types of memes all share the convention of having titles and being found on a well-known image of a person or character.

The final generator I viewed was a game idea generator. This generator created a specific category that each game would be based on. These categories consist of; environment, goal, genre, rules, and wildcard. Each time the generator is used, it gives a different combination of categories to base a game on. Therefore, creating a different and one-of-a-kind game each time.

All these genre generators all have many things in common, but I believe the largest thing in common they all have together is that they are nonsensical. All these generators create nonsensical products based off something we tell it to create. Whatever you tell these generators, the product will always be completely random and have no meaning to them other than how you choose to understand it.

  1. i like the personal genre generator you picked! but before i touch on that i want to note how professional this post looks. it reminds me, structurally, of the science papers because it touches on things one at a time and it is grammatically effect with a somewhat formal tone. Your last point of how all these genres are nonsensical is very interesting. i had not looked at it that way, and that shed a new perspective on this project for me. great article!

  3. I really liked the way everything was written and organized, it made it easier to know what you were looking at and describing and most importantly you knew what you were talking about. I liked the game idea generator because I never heard of anything like that before. Your choice of format is eye catching. You were specific on all the topics which made it easier to get your point across for not only myself but other readers. In my opinion, you had a great outline and made easy to follow along. You had a good choice of graphics as well. Good job!

  4. I love all of the images you gave as a reference for your audience, they are all well placed throughout your blog post. I think you organized this really well and added in some great transitions that make all of your points connect and flow right to your final conclusion. Great job with pulling out all of the main conventions for each example that you gave. My favorite example has to be the game idea generator, it was a unique example and very out-of-the-box thinking to use it. Overall this is a well put together post! Great job, 10/10 would read your blog again.

  6. I love reading your blog post because you keep them casual but also jam packed with information. Your wording throughout the post was exceptional. I loved how you brainstormed first then looked up the actual conventions. This shows that you put a lot of thought into your research. One of the things that really stood out to me was your organization of the post. This organization helped keep me engaged in the reading and made me want to keep reading. I also loved the additional topic you chose. I would of never expected this and it was very creative. I Loved the pictures you selected as well. They kept me engaged. Great job. I always love reading your work
